In the early days of my career, I was taught to fear the QueryException: Too many query rows: 50001. For years, we hacked our way around governor limits using standard offset pagination or batchable interfaces.
But we are in a new era of Salesforce. With Data Cloud and Agentforce demanding real-time processing of massive datasets, "good enough" isn't enough anymore.
Today, I’m putting Apex Cursors in the ring against Standard Pagination. If you want to process million-row datasets without hitting a wall, you need to understand this architectural shift.
The Contenders 🥊
1. Standard Pagination (The Veteran)
We all know the OFFSET clause. It’s simple, it’s familiar, but it has a massive weakness: The 2,000-row limit.
"As a Coach, I always tell my students: Offset pagination is like trying to climb a skyscraper using only the first 20 floors. Eventually, you run out of stairs."
2. Apex Cursors (The New Champion) 🚀
Introduced to handle the scale of modern data, Apex Cursors allow us to navigate through query results in a high-performance, stateless manner.
The Power: They support up to 50 million rows in a single result set.
The Flexibility: You can move forward and backward through the data without re-executing the initial query.
3 "War Story" Use Cases for Apex Cursors 🏗️
1. High-Volume Agentic Grounding: When my Agentforce agents need to analyze a year’s worth of transaction history to "ground" a reasoning response, standard pagination would time out. Cursors allow the agent to fetch chunks of 50,000 rows at a time, maintaining state without crashing the transaction.
2. The "Clean Core" Data Export: I recently built a solution to push historical audit logs to an external warehouse. By using Cursors, I processed 1.2 million records in a single flow-triggered execution, avoiding the complexity of chained Batch Apex.
3. Real-Time UI Grids: For a client in Bengaluru, we built a custom LWC grid that needed to scroll through thousands of assets. Cursors allowed us to provide a "Infinite Scroll" experience that felt as fast as a local spreadsheet.
