The Clean Core Manifesto: Deciding Between Record-Triggered Flows and Apex in 2026 🏗️✨

The "Apex vs. Flow" war is over. The winner? The Business.

In 2026, the Clean Core Strategy has become the gold standard for enterprise Salesforce implementations. The goal is simple: Keep the core of your CRM lean, discoverable, and upgrade-safe. But as we migrate logic from legacy Triggers to high-performance Record-Triggered Flows, the question remains—where do we draw the line?

The "Clean Core" Hierarchy 📊

To maintain a 10/10 Org, you must follow the Execution Order of Operations. In 2026, the recommendation has shifted:

  1. Before-Save Flows: For high-speed field updates on the same record (10x faster than Apex).

  2. After-Save Flows: For cross-object logic and launching Agentic actions.

  3. Apex Triggers (The "Heavy Lifters"): Reserved for complex math, multi-object collections, and high-concurrency sharding.

🚀 Pro-Tip: The "Logic Density" Rule

How do you decide when to stay in Apex? Use the Logic Density test.

  • If your requirement involves more than 3 levels of related object updates or requires Map-based deduplication, Flow becomes a "spaghetti" risk.

  • Stay in Apex when you need a Unit of Work pattern to manage 50M+ records (as we discussed in our Async blog!).

🏗️ The 10/10 Implementation: The Hybrid Pattern

The most impressive architects in 2026 don't choose one; they use both. They use Flow for Orchestration and Invocable Apex for Computation.

The Pattern:

  • Flow: Handles the "When" (e.g., When an Opportunity is Closed Won).

  • Invocable Apex: Handles the "How" (e.g., A complex discount calculation engine).
